Identification
Maximum length is 50 cm for a weight of 1.5 kg. This species has a straight mouth and its lower lip has a thick cornified sheath. Body is elongated, head shape is triangular. Coloration silvery with very slight red tinge on fins.
Range and habitat
Bassins of rivers from Black Sea, southern Baltic Sea and southern North Sea (Danube, , Vistula and more) ; also in Turkey, Introduced in France and Italy. Lives in rivers with shallow waters and fast currents, on rocky and gravel bottoms.

Status : The species is still numerous in the wild and often outcompetes other more specialized species. Potentially threatened by dam construction, pollution and destruction of spawning sites.
