Identification
Adults can reach 10 cm in length for a weight of 9.5 g. Male is bright red with blackish belly and tail, white spots on red plumage and on darker wings. Female is grey with red bill. This subspecies is brighter red and has no black lore line.

Range and habitat
This species occurs in from Pakistan and India to South-east Thailand. Also in Java, Bali and lesser Sundas. This subspecies is found from Myanmar to Java. Lives in humid grasslands, marshes, rice fields, cultivated areas, to 2400 m.

Status : The species isn’t threatened and can be locally common. Populations are declining in Indonesia. Introduced in few countries around the world.
