Identification
Adults can grow to 25 cm in length. Body usually cylindrical with broad head. Large mouth and large yellow-orange eye. Coloration very variable, from olive to brown or light grey with indistinct spotting on flanks and large spot on tail peduncle.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in eastern and southern Asia, from India to China, south to Malaysia and Indonesia east to Wallace’s line. Lives in stagnant water bodies, sluggish rivers, swamps, canals and estuaries.

Status : This species is likely a species complex. Some species have been split, it appears this one is quite safe within its range so far.
