Identification
The species can grow to 25 cm in length for a weight of 158 g. Most plumage on wings and back is dark shiny violet to purple. Belly is very dark grey to black. White bib and chin. Head dark grey with large white band around eyes. Subspecies with extensive white bib.

Range and habitat
This subspecies occurs in most of New Guinea and in nearby islands of Bismarck archipelago. The other subspecies is found in the Solomon islands. Lives in rainforests, secondary forests and brushy gardens up to 2300 meters.

Status : The species isn’t believed to be threatened although it is rarely observed in the wild. Only locally common in mountain foothills areas.
