Identification
The species can reach up to 15 cm in length. Juveniles are dark orange, adults are black, often with yellow snout and belly. Two large vertical white bands on flanks. Thin white band on tail peduncle. Tail fin is bright yellow.

Range and habitat
This species occurs in the Indo-Pacific area, from the Persian Gulf to Micronesia, south Japan and northern Australia. Lives in lagoons and outer reef slopes down to 60 meters.

CITES : Not Listed
Status : This species has a huge range and remains common despite locally intense collecting for trade. It is likely a species complex and each single unit should be re-assessed individually.
