Identification
Adults reach up to 15 cm in length. One of the larger species of its genus, with cylindrical body and large head. Coloration cream to grey with vertical black bars edged with white. Dark spots on forehead, dark edges on fins.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in the Pacific ocean, from Philippines to Society islands, north to South Japan, south to Lord Howe Island and southern Australia. Lives in coastal areas, on sandy bottoms near reefs with algae, to 50 m.

Status : The species’ status hasn’t been assessed so far but it seems to be common despite being often caught in big numbers for international trade.
