Identification
Body length of 46 cm, tail length of 55 cm, weight of 4.2 kg. Males much larger. Face is usually dark pink-grey. Black crown (bigger in females and youngs), white hairs around face, shoulders and breast. Rest of fur grey-olive-brown.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in South America, from western Venezuela and the Orinoco Basin to the Guianas and adjacent extreme north Brazil. Lives in primary rainforests and gallery forest, rarely in woodlands, to 2000 m.

CITES : Appendix II
Status : The species remains common but subspecies castaneus could be endangered. It is vulnerable to overtrapping (hunting for meat) and habitat loss.
