Identification
Adults can reach about 150 cm in length but are generally closer to 100 cm. Laterally flattened body with steep head profile. Silvery. Fairly big eyes. Adults have small fins, juveniles have filaments protruding from dorsal and pelvic fins.

Range and habitat
The species occurs worldwide, in coastal tropical seas, from Florida to Gulf of Mexico and Senegal to Congo in Atlantic, from Red Sea to California in Pacific. Lives around coastal waters over rocky and sandy bottoms, to 60 meters at least.

Status : The species has a huge range and is locally common despite habitat loss, disturbance and being locally targeted by fisheries for food.
