Identification
Adults can grow to about 35 cm in length, usually smaller. Round shovel-like upper lip and snout. Coloration is brownish with orange tinge near tail, black margin on each scales. Vertical black bands on flanks. Red fins when breeding.
Range and habitat
The species occurs in eastern Asia, on the island of Taiwan and in east and south-east mainland China. Lives in freshwater rivers and lakes, mostly on rocky bottom.

Status : The species is poorly known but thought to have a large range and remain numerous in the wild. It is regularly caught as a food fish.
