Identification
The species can grow to 19 cm in length, being the largest native American toad. Smooth and leathery skin, sometimes with scattered warts. Large glands behind head. Uniform dark greenish to greyish-brown coloration. Golden eyes.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in North America, from south-east California to Arizona and New Mexico, south to north-west Mexico. Lives in arid mesquite bushy lowlands and grasslands, often near water, to 1610 m.

Status : The species remains common within its range and can tolerate a degree of habitat modification as long as water remains for breeding.
