Identification
Adults can grow to 60 cm in body length, 76 cm in tail length and a weight of 6.4 kg. Black face, grizzled golden fur, darker on head. Crown has a small white edge. Light golden tinge on cheeks and inner limbs. White belly and breast.
Range and habitat
The species occurs from south Mauritania and Senegal to Ghana. It has been introduced in Cape Verde, Canary Islands and some islands in the west Indies. Lives in gallery woodlands, wooded savannas and tropical forest edges.

Status : The species is still numerous and widespread but hunted for meat in parts of its range. It is considered a pest in most of its range by farmers.
