Identification
Adults can grow to 31 cm in length. Very elegant species with grey-beige coloration, dark blue area around tail spine and around mouth. Blue-edged black fins. Presence of two short but wide horizontal black bands behind gill coverts.
Range and habitat
This species occurs in the Indian Ocean, from East Africa (but not Red Sea) to Sri Lanka and eastwards to Lesser Sundas islands (Indonesia). Lives in lagoons and seaward reefs, including reef slopes, down to 40 meters deep.

Status : The species is still common within its large range but is harvested both for the trade and as a food fish. Monitoring of trade levels is recommended.
