Identification
The species can grow to 35 cm in length for a weight of 204 g, females being heavier than males. Plumage is ashy grey on head, back and wings. Breast and belly are rufous-brown, lower belly and legs white. Reddish-orange cere.

Range and habitat
The species breeds in South-east Russia, south-east China and Korea. It winters in Hainan, Philippines and Indonesia. Lives in forests, wooded areas and plantations, often near wetlands, below 1500 m.

Status : The species is apparently very numerous in its large range. Radar studies during migration indicates that more than 200 000 birds are seen yearly.
