Identification
Fairly large species for its genus, reaching up to 2 cm in length. Bright red head with black crown is diagnostic. Body and limbs black with blue reticulation.

Range and habitat
The species is endemic to Peru and only found in southern Loreto and eastern San Martin regions between Rio Huallaga and Rio Ucayali. It lives mostly in undisturbed lowland forests near floodplains, not far from rivers. It can be found near treefall areas and open areas within the forests.

IUCN RED LIST : VULNERABLE
CITES : Appendix II
Status : The species has a small range and deforestation is one of the main threats it faces, along with over-collection for the international trade.
