Identification
Adults can reach 31 cm in length for a weight of 127 g. Red legs, fairly long black bill, conspicuous blue eyering. Plumage chocolate brown with darker wings and grey tinge on neck and flanks. The wings are conspicuously white. Subspecies smaller and with warmer brown colors (less grey).

Range and habitat
The species occurs from extreme south USA, including Florida, to Mexico, south to Costa Rica and Panama. Also found in the Caribbean islands. Subspecies found from south Texas to Mexico and Nicaragua. Lives in arid scrub, deciduous woodlands, grasslands and deserts, to 2500 m.
