Identification
Small and unmistakable kingfisher reaching 20 cm in length for a weight of 74 g. Blue wings and tail, greenish-blue back. Head and breast chestnut-brown with green nape band. Male has chestnut belly, female has white belly.
Range and habitat
The species used to occur in the Pacific Ocean archipelago of Micronesia and was endemic to the island of Guam. It used to live in forests, woodlands, swamps, mangroves and gardens.

Status : The species has been driven to extinction by predation by introduced by an Australian tree snake species, Boiga irregularis. A reintroduction project is currently being prepared.
