Identification
The species grows to 13 cm in length for a weight of 23.6 grams. Unmistakable. Head is bright yellow with slightly darker crown, black mask and black throat. Black nape. Rest of plumage is turquoise with buff belly, black-striped wings.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in South America, in the Andes, from western Venezuela and central Colombia to central Bolivia. Lives in humid mossy forests, including edges and clearings, from 1000 to 3150 m.

CITES : Not Listed
Status : The species is locally common but some of its populations are fragmented because of deforestation. Northern populations seem more at risk.
