Identification
Adults can reach a length of 14 cm for a weight of 23 g. Crown, nape and back black. Opal-yellow rump, violet-blue tail, brown belly. This subspecies has violet-blue flanks and breast, bright blue face and large black collar on upper breast.

Range and habitat
This subspecies occurs in the Guianas and north Brazil. Species also found from central Colombia and Venezuela to central Brazil and Bolivia. Lives in humid forests, second growth and tall trees in clearings, to 1200 m.

Status : The species is only locally common and may be threatened in parts of its range by deforestation. Extensive tracts of suitable habitat still remain.
