Identification
Adults can grow to 67 cm in length for a weight of 1.6 kg and a wingspan of 120 cm. Unmistakable. White breast and belly with rows of black spots. Dark brown wings, chocolate brown nape and head with darker and pointed crest.

Range and habitat
This subspecies occurs in South America, from east Colombia to Guianas, south to south-east Brazil. Species also found from Mexico to west Colombia. Lives mostly in primary humid forests, sometimes close to clearings, to 3000 m.

IUCN RED LIST : NEAR THREATENED
CITES : Appendix II
Status : The species is conspicuous but nowhere considered common. It is threatened by deforestation in more and more areas of its range.
