Identification
Adults can grow to 16 cm in length for a weight of 37 grams. Bright silvery-grey bill with black tip. Female has grey head, dirty yellow belly and dark wings. Males are velvety black with large bright scarlet-red rump patch.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in Central America, from South-East Mexico (excluding Yucatan peninsula), south to Caribbean coast of Costa Rica and north-west Panama. Lives in bushy forest edges, clearings, second growth, in humid areas, to 1200 m.

Status : The species is locally common and can withstand habitat degradation. However, some populations have disappeared because of deforestation.
