Identification
Adults can grow to 17 cm in length for a weight of 37.5 grams. Male is very dark purple, turning black on back, wings and belly. Shiny silvery bill with dark tip. The female is dark reddish-brown with darker back. Dull silvery-grey bill. This subspecies is dark with dark purple-red face and breast for males.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in South America, from north Colombia, Venezuela and Guianas to south Brazil and most of Bolivia. Subspecies found from east Colombia to Guianas and northern half of Brazil. Lives in Open woodlands, shrublands, clearings and forest edges, to 2000 m.

Status : The species remains globally safe and common within its large range. Its tolerance to habitat modification is a good sign for the future.
