Identification
Adults can grow to 48 cm in length for a weight of 455 grams. Fairly short shallow and narrow bill, mostly black with yellow culmen and tip. Base is yellow and blue. Blue eyering. Thin red breast band. Black with orange rump and red vent.

Range and habitat
This subspecies occurs in South America, from western Venezuela south to north Bolivia and the western parts of the Amazonian forest in Brazil. Lives in forested lowlands, riverine forests and swamp forests, to 1750 m.

Status : This subspecies is still locally common but declining in most of its range, mostly because of intense deforestation. Locally vulnerable to hunting.
