Identification
Adults can grow to 56 cm in length and 746 grams. Plumage mostly shiny blackish-brown. White rump and bright red undertail tuft. Yellow face and breast. Green eyering and yellow and chestnut-brown bill.

Range and habitat
This species occurs from Nicaragua to Panama and south to south-west Ecuador. Lives in foothill forests, occasionally in plantations and parks, up to 2600 meters.

IUCN RED LIST : NEAR THREATENED (as R. ambiguus)
CITES : Appendix II
Status : The species is threatened by deforestation, especially in the South American parts of its range. Still occasionally trapped for the bird trade.
