Identification
One of the biggest African monitors, reaching up to 2 meters in length for a weight up to 17 kg with males heavier than females. Large head with box-like appearance because of convex snout. Coloration mottled grey. Blackish throat.
Range and habitat
This subspecies occurs in East Africa, from Somalia to Tanzania. Species also found from Angola and Zambia to South Africa. Mostly found in dry open habitats but not deserts, often in steppes and savannas.

Status : The species has a large range and remains common but is heavily hunted in many parts of its range.
