Identification
Adults can grow to 80 cm in length. Thick but narrow head with very light scaly ridge between eyes and roundish snout. Coloration from grey to grey brown or light red brown with transversal dark bands, sometimes becoming rows of blotches.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in South-east Asia and is endemic to the island of Tanahjampea in eastern-central Indonesia. Lives in dry tropical woodlands and forests.

IUCN RED LIST : ENDANGERED
CITES : Not listed
Status : The species occurs on a single island only and can tolerate a bit of changes in its habitat. However it is unsustainably harvested for the pet trade. It is now on the verge of extinction.
