Identification
Adults can grow up to 71 cm in length. Slender body and round head with large eyes. Brownish back and flanks with two longitudinal yellow bands and a broad orange band on back. Clear belly. Elongated blotches on flanks. Subspecies with bright orange dorsal line.
Range and habitat
The species occurs from south Alaska to Canada, south to USA, including Florida and north Mexico. Subspecies found in Texas, Kansas and Oklahoma. Lives in grasslands and woodlands, in damp soil near water sources.

IUCN RED LIST : LEAST CONCERN
CITES : Not listed
Status : The species has an extremely large distribution and remains locally abundant. Some isolated populations may be threatened by habitat loss.
