Identification
Adults reach a maximum length of 21 cm. Coloration is light olive to beige with faint vermiculations on flanks and light brown dotting on face. Fins are reddish-brown with dark edging. Black spot above and below tail peduncle.
Range and habitat
The species occurs in the Indo-Pacific area, from Red Sea and South Africa to south Japan and Great Barrier Reef, east to Hawaii and Tuamoto Islands. Lives in shallow lagoons and seaward reefs over hard substrates, down to 25 m.

Status : The species is one of the commonest surgeonfishes in coral reefs. It is locally heavily collected for the trade. So far, this isn’t considered a threat.
