Identification
Adults grow to 24 cm in length for a weight of 95 g. Female is larger than male. Male has bright red crown, rump, tail and belly, brownish rufescent breast and wings. Female is dull orange with olive wings, back and breast.
Range and habitat
The species occurs in South America, from south-east Venezuela and the Guianas to amazonian Brazil, south to lower Rio Tapajos. Lives in humid lowlands and foothills forests, to 600 meters.

Status : The species has a large range but is very local and quite rare within it, for unknown reasons. It occurs in many protected areas.
