Identification
Adults can grow to 9 cm in length for a weight of 12.8 g. Reddish legs, small grey bill. Female is dull olive to grey-green with yellowish tinge on belly. Male is velvety black with bright orange-yellow head and nape. Male has big white eyes. Subspecies with darker yellow-orange nape with darker collar.

Range and habitat
This subspecies occurs from east Panama to Venezuela, Guianas, Trinidad and north Brazil. Species also found from Colombia to Peru and north-west Brazil. Lives in humid forests, deciduous forests and woodlands, to 2000 m.

Status : The species is common within its range and, in places, considered as the commonest forest bird. It occurs in many protected areas.
