Notes : No subspecies known. Taxonomic status of this species is debated, some authors still believe that this could be a population of C. lupus pallipes. For the time being, we treat it as distinct.

Identification
Smaller than Eurasian wolf, reaching 1 m in body length and weight of 32 kg. Elongated head with slender muzzle, thin tail with dark tip, clear legs. Rest of fur variable, from light brown to grayish. Fur much lighter than for Canis lupus.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in South Asia, mostly in peninsular where it has a patchy distribution. Might also be found in Nepal and Bhutan but presence unconfirmed. Lives mostly in dry habitats such as scrublands and semi-arid grasslands.

IUCN RED LIST : LEAST CONCERN (as C. lupus pallipes)
CITES : Appendix III
Status : This species was formerly thought to be conspecific with Canis lupus pallipes and hasn’t been assessed on its on yet. Could be globally threatened.
