Identification
Large surgeonfish reaching up to 54 cm in length. Round head profile. Coloration light blue with thin wavy lines on face and flanks. Golden yellow area around eyes and forehead. Dorsal fin yellow, blue-spotted lunate tail, white tail spine.
Range and habitat
The species occurs in the Indo-Pacific, from East Africa to Hawaii and Line islands, north to south Japan, south to Lord Howe Island. Absent from central Pacific. Lives in coastal seaward reef slopes and outer reefs, from 4 to 140 meters.

Status : The species has a large range and remains locally common. It is heavily fished and often caught for aquarium trade but these aren’t immediate threats.
