Identification
Adults can grow to 60 cm in length. Laterally compressed body with relatively short fins. Small skin groove just in front of eyes. Coloration is grey with top of flanks spotted black, lower half of flanks with small to large yellow spots.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in the Indo-Pacific region, from Red Sea and South Africa to Japan and Australia. Also occurs around St Helena island in south Atlantic. Lives in deep coastal slopes, over muddy and sandy bottoms, estuaries, to 350 m.
