Identification
The species can grow to a length of 19 cm for a weight of 44 g. Thick horn-colored bill, black legs. Plumage is mostly white, except from back, wings and tail which are slate grey, turning nearly black. Bright red head with conspicuous crest.
Range and habitat
This species occurs in South America, from eastern Bolivia and south Brazil, southwards to northern central Argentina and Uruguay. Lives in forest edges, scrublands, open woodlands and urban parks, to 500 m.
