Identification
Adults can reach a length of 25 cm. Venomous spines on dorsal fin. Concave forehead and long snout. Coloration is black and white on head and breast, bright yellow on rest of body. Similar to S. unimaculatus but lacks black flank spot.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in the western Pacific Ocean, from western Philippines and Indonesia to Great Barrier reef, east to New Caledonia and Marshall Islands. Lives in outer coral reefs and lagoons with rich coral growth, down to 30 meters.

Status : The species is considered as safe so far as it has a huge range. It could be locally threatened by habitat loss and overcollection for aquarium trade.
