Identification
The species can grow up to 60 cm in length for a weight of 2.2 kg and can reach more than 100 years of age. Large mouth, concave forehead. Spines on forehead and gill coverts. Red-orange body with broad vertical black bars on flanks.
Range and habitat
This species is found in the eastern Pacific ocean, from southern Alaska to Central California, USA. Mostly found in rocky reefs, below 10 meters and down to 275 meters deep.
