Identification
The species can grow to 45 cm in length for a weight of 1,6 kg. Skin is very warty, large eyes, large mouth, flattened back. Coloration usually grey with darker and lighter mottling on all its back and flanks. White spots near pectoral axil.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in the western Atlantic Ocean, from Bermudas and north USA coasts to northern Brazil and northern Gulf of Mexico. Lives in shallow coral reefs and rocky reefs, down to 60 meters deep.

Status : The species isn’t considered threatened at the moment. It has a large range and occurs in disturbed areas. Targeted locally by fisheries.
