Identification
Adults can grow to 38 cm in length for a weight of 500 g. Small black bill. Flanks and belly grey to beige. White breast with black and dark green collar. Back, top of wings and tail very dark green. Dark green cap, white head and neck. This subspecies is smaller.
Range and habitat
This subspecies occurs in south Asia, from Pakistan and India to south China, south to Malaysia, Philippines, Indonesia, New Guinea. Other subspecies found in Eastern Australia. Lives in freshwater pools, ponds, lakes, rivers and marshes, also mangroves.

Status : The species is locally common but has experienced declines in Laos and Indonesia due to habitat loss. Australian subspecies is now rare.
