Notes : No subspecies known. Sometimes placed in genus Hyelaphus.

Identification
Body length of 140 cm, shoulder height of 70 cm, tail of 20 cm for a weight of 60 kg. Short-legged deer with barrel-shaped body. Small three-points antlers. Fur is uniformly brown with clearer throat. Fawns born unspotted.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in South East Asia and is endemic to the island of Bawean, located north of Java. Found in hilly secondary forests mostly.

Conservation
IUCN RED LIST : CRITICALLY ENDANGERED
CITES : Appendix I
Status : The species is legally protected but very close to extinction because of clearing of forests for teak plantations. Previously hunted.
