Identification
Adults reach a length of 24 cm for a weight of 91 g. The species has black and white irregular bands on wings and undertail. Breast and belly light beige with a reddish tinge on belly. Bright red nape (extending to forehead for males).

Range and habitat
The species occurs in north America, from extreme south-east Canada to most of eastern half of USA except extreme south Texas. Lives in open woodlands, wooded savannas, suburban gardens, to 900 m.
