Identification
Adults can reach 48 cm in length for a weight of 490 g. Unmistakable, small crest on nape. Plumage globally light grey-beige with dark brown wings and flanks mottled beige. Face and nape brown (mask-like marking), black bill.

Range and habitat
The species has a fragmented range and breeds around Mediterranean Sea and scattered locations around western and south-central Asia. Lives in pools and marshes in arid areas, with abundant vegetation.

Status : The species experiences local declines and extinctions because of droughts, intensive hunting, habitat loss and poisoning by pesticides.
