Identification
The species can reach 50 cm in size for a weight of 900 g. Wings brown with dark barring and mottling. Black belly. Neck grey (for males) with black longitudinal stripe reaching black belly. Back of neck and head orange-buff colored.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in eastern Africa from South-east Sudan and eastern Ethiopia to Kenya, Uganda and north Tanzania. Lives in arid and semi arid bushy savanna, up to 1800 meters.

IUCN RED LIST : LEAST CONCERN
CITES : Appendix II
Status : The species’ status is unclear as the species is sometimes treated as conspecific with two other bustards. Seems reasonably common except in Sudan.
