Identification
Adults reach a length of about 1 meter. Dark stripe running from eye to jaws. Coloration dark olive to brown, belly is generally white. This subspecies has wide transversal brown to chestnut bands covering the whole body.

Range and habitat
This subspecies occurs from Arkansas, Missouri and Louisiana to Texas. The species is found in most of south-east USA, from Texas to Florida. Lives in vegetated freshwater lakes, ponds, marshes and sluggish rivers.

IUCN RED LIST : LEAST CONCERN
CITES : Not listed
Status : The species has a large range and many populations are known. Most of them are safe although there are cases of declines due to wetland drainage.
