Identification
Adults can reach a total length of 1.80 meters. Very long but thick body, large head, distinct from neck. Nominate subspecies is brown with conspicuous transversal cream to white bars with dark speckles.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in south-western Africa, from south Angola, Namibia and Botswana to northern South-Africa and Lesotho. Lives in dry savannas, semi-deserts and steppes.

CITES : Not listed
Status : The species isn’t yet threatened by habitat loss on a large scale. Collection for the trade is minimal so far.
